From an initial short-list of (10) local firms, BUILD was one of four chosen to interview for the Gethsemane Lutheran Church renovation and new structure containing church administrative functions and (40) units of affordable housing by LATCH at 9th and Stewart in downtown Seattle.

Our vision focused on the following key tenets:
1. Providing a compelling presence to passers-by (vehicles and pedestrians), a layered sequence of events and an engaging presence to all building visitors; making the completed project a downtown destination.
2. Maintaining harmony between the renovated structure, new administrative building and housing above; retaining the poetics of the thoughtful program while handling the technical challenges.
3. Creating a renovated sanctuary that engages the community (outward focus), appeals to Gethsemane members and expands on Gethsemane’s presence as the ‘soul’ of the neighborhood.
4. Respecting the outlined project schedule and budget.
5. Exceeding the expectations and hopes of the congregation that has uniformly agreed to place their trust in the Gethsemane board and their selected Architect.

Additionally, BUILD committed our resources and systems for raising awareness and recognition for Gethsemane’s compelling mission of service and faith among our peers primarily through the BUILDblog and our community relationships.
